The deaths have sent shockwaves through Freehold Township. Many who filled the pews Monday were young people who came to remember a woman heavily involved in the public school system and who had three daughters who all attend Freehold Township schools. "The suddenness of, and the circumstances surrounding, her death make this even more painful as someone who valued her friendship and her contributions to the Township. "She was a pleasure to be around, was genuinely a kind and considerate person, and she was extremely generous with herself and her time," he said in a statement. "We are a family town and as such, we will come together to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of our friend."Ĭommitteeman Anthony Ammiano described Denise Bartone as "treasure" to the township and an ally "in the fight to provide better opportunities in our schools." She was actively involved in so many areas of our community, that it is difficult to imagine not seeing her anymore," McMorrow said in a statement. "The fact that we now refer to her in the past tense breaks our hearts. Mayor Barbara McMorrow said Denise Bartone grew close with town leaders through her work in the school system. Members of the Freehold Township Committee and school board were among those in attendance. Many broke down in tears and embraced each other as the pews emptied. Mourners prayed together and sang hymns during the roughly 30-minute-long service. "We do that in prayer, we do that by being there for them and we do that by carrying the light," he said. All of the sudden we didn’t feel the sun," he said, a reference to Monday's unseasonably warm temperatures. "The darkness had entered our hearts."īut Sirianni told mourners that the community would need to support the Bartone daughters in the days ahead and help chase the darkness away. "All of the sudden we didn’t feel the 60-degree weather. ![]() Sirianni, the rector of the co-cathedral, told those in attendance at the vigil that the community needed a place to mourn and pray after "the day went dark" following the news of the couple's deaths.
